MAESTRAZGO – Rural lifestyleWhen the word ‘Spain' comes into conversation the first thoughts are sun, sea and sangria and straight away we are left with an understated perception of a vastly diverse and charming country, with landscapes of mountains that creep over the horizon and excite the sense with their grand peaks. These vistas are sighted from the many golden sanded beaches and feel almost unreachable to human hands. What if you could jump into the picture and experience a Spain that is untouched?
Let us take you on a journey through Mediaeval towns with lots of history, crystal clear rivers and traditional old villages built within castle walls at the top of tall mountain peaks.
Take a drive from around 20km to 100km inland from the coast of the Costa Del Azahar and there you will witness the many different regions of the Maestrazgo mountains.
Teruel & Aragón Teruel is a region that has an exceptional landscape that never fails to surprise visitors with its extreme and impressive contrasts. This variety of landscapes and climates makes it ideal for more adventurous leisure activities. One of the most characteristic, physical geographical features of Teruel and its neighbouring region of Aragón is its water, which often takes the form of glacial mountain tarns, waterfalls and rivers that sculpt the rocks in their paths to form gorges, wells and canyons. There are also reservoirs and artificial lakes.
The province of Teruel , in the south of Aragon , is home to most of the Sistema Iberico mountain range area. Its geography offers abundant contrasts between the plains surrounding Teruel city and mountainous areas such as Gudar, Albarracin or Javalambre. The traces of its rich past are found in Teruel in the form of many archaeological remains, cave paintings, Iberian and Roman sites and the tracks of dinosaurs. They offer all that's best in walking: fantastic scenery, great places to stay, good weather and, above all, variety. Serious walkers will relish the chance to seek out the unexplored valleys in the Aragon Pyrenees. Those who prefer an easier pace can stay closer to civilization, enjoying the culture and history of the town or village through which they are walking. They can provide the best of both worlds. There's a wide variety of other activities too. If you like to break the day's trek for an hour or two, there are literally hundreds of perfect lakes in which to cool your feet or to swim. The ancient Romanesque, Gothic and Mudejar churches are worth a visit in their own rights. Teruel and Aragon are places where there is still scope to explore an area untouched by tourism. Castellón Castellón, like Teruel and Aragon generates it beauty and natural serenity from the tall mountain peaks and small medieval villages. Although the main city of Castellón is by the sea, the inland villages are beginning to get recognised by many nature lovers. The villages of Castellfort, Ares and Morella are all elevated on peaks with tremendous views of the tiered landscape. Each unique town is seeped in history and architectural brilliance that one visit is not enough.
Tourism All of the hotels are located in buildings of great historic and artistic interest which have been recovered after a long period of disuse. They are set in locations of interest to tourists which previously had very little tourist accommodation. In this way, both the central government and local city halls have renovated interesting buildings for tourism in an attempt to revitalise certain areas of the province and provide work for local people, thus maintaining the population, the economy and the historical monuments in these areas. These form the basic criteria for the selection and renovation of historical buildings into first class hotels.
